Bloody Hell 07:27
The words are alive, and I am too, but where do they go? The hills are aloft, and time passes faster, but when does it stop? And you left quickly, and you never stopped. This chorus means nothing, the mics are just open and my headphones are on. The Space Echo shimmers and it doesn’t stop even when the lyric does, And you never stopped exiting the story. Pollinate me, or someone else might, but would you like to? Because love is something I’ve felt before, but was it real? I stare at the kitty in the window, but what does it know? Time waits…bloody hell. The song isn’t alive, but I’ll keep adding - who even cares? But the hills are aloft, and time passes faster, but who does it doesn’t stop. And this chorus doesn’t matter and it never stops.

Jeanie, sometime we’re just blotted-out hours, Other times we were both just wilting flowers. You were the shinning star in my mourning, You was the Morningstar in my evening. You know I spent a long time waiting for you. Singing some other line from a song that wasn’t mine. You know I spent a long time waiting for you. The key to understanding Snake River Mountain Is that the characters are all just parts of me; I can act out all my whimsies upon them, But I cannot write you back to me.
3.
You ought to go back from where you came. See Emily speak these things today. I write them down and she says the words on the page. She’s my character designed to do these things today. So let her watch the nightfall, and see the steam rising from the leaves. Let your veins poke out long, The bluish branches cry out for your mouth. I see her looming and you start stumbling toward me, But she don’t walk and she doesn’t make eyes on me, She just acts the parts as written, and then she’ll see the steam rising from the leaves. Emily says, “I do not know why you’re fight for me Jeanie, You should just go now, and let me be. Say things that reference the snow and the lilting steam rising into the unknown, mourning lily.” You said, “I’ll go now to adjacent room,” Holding the knife that’s to be my doom. I made you raise it, and I watched it entering me. But you do it lightly, because I made you place it gently in me. Put my body in the backyard and you’ll see the steam rising as I leave.
4.
Someone’s going to sing me songs tonight, As I lay by the fire, drunk and feeling alright, But I’ll still be afraid of love. Now that everyone’s gone too, I’m alone Gerrard, the cat is in the other room, And I’m here and I’m still afraid of love. I know I’m going to slip and want to feel your bony hips again. Brush your hair aside, kiss your neck and wonder why that I am afraid of love. It’s weird, because it’s always in my songs. Reg speaks and Jeanie longs, And I’m trying to be something I’m not. I’ve been alone for sometime, I don’t want to see it in their eyes, them telling me to go back inside.
5.
I won’t tell you, I’ll make you wait and see That I’m afraid of honesty. Nothing is something categorically: One and one is zero, wouldn’t you agree? Let the nightfall. “Leave by the back door,” she said to me that day. I said, “fine, dear.” She said, “ok.” “I’ll see you sometime,” I heard her say. I said something and walked out into the day. Let the nightfall. The night got torn back – daylight drew the blinds. Sibilance and kettles squeal, my mind and teeth grind. I reach for the bottle before it reaches for me, 5:30 is early enough because when it gets too dark I can’t see. Let the nightfall.
6.
Never good at going back, Never good at going back to stay. Wouldn’t you just want to try? You might just want to find out anyway? You were lying there flowers formed your hair. You were laying down on the ground. “You’re so good at stalling,” I said. “Don’t you want to fall in love and take another chance?” To which she said, “leave by the backdoor. Open and then close it and face the daylight outside.” And the snow flies waywardly away, And I wonder where we might go today. I’m a Zelig in the modern world, And you’re a zenith in this tiny work.
7.
When I was just a little birdie sitting up in the tree, There was no one there beside me, mama bird was out on a wing. I want to tell you this thing that I’ve been thinking about, But I’m just a little birdie, and I don’t have a mouth, And no, you can’t speak with a beak. And I’ve got a problem of my own, I am just little birdie sitting out in the cold. When I was just little kitty on the back of the couch, The blanket was all around my body I was warm and dreamed of chasing a mouse. The neighborhood cats peak through the window, Sometimes they put their paws on the glass, And I run away with my tail all puffed-up thinking, My god what an ugly cat, wishing I could kick its ass. And I’ve got a problem of my own, For I am just a little kitty staring out into the cold. You know I’ve got a problem of my own, I am just a little human staring out into the cold.
8.
I used to move like a force of nature, Now I just sit here alone with two. The fire flickers before me, And I don’t even think of her. It’s been a long time since you were mine. Jeanie, well, you know, she isn’t you, She’s a composite character, But if I focus on one part of her, All I’ll see is you. It’s been a long time since you were mine.
9.
High Rides 02:43
Jeanie, want to go for a ride? I’ll grab some beers and let’s head outside. There’s a party maybe, on Ottawa, Let’s ride there fast for at least one, Because I’m high and I want to ride, So Jeanie won’t you let me ride. Drunk cycling at night! Go home before the morning light Peers between the houses and streets, Before the hangover hits me, Because I’m high and I want to ride, So Jeanie won’t you let me ride.
10.
Someone is speaking softly above the din. Reg turns to look but there isn’t anyone there. Just the silhouette of a blank cassette he sees through the curtain. I see it too, but it’s nothing new, it just happens to be there. Christopher, you’re somewhere, some other place high above nothing. If Reg is me, and you are you, and we live in an imagined world, And if this isn’t real, then why do I feel everything is so true: The sunshine, the moonshine, the shade of a balcony. Isn’t it wild, isn’t grand? Except that there’s just no you. Christopher, you’re somewhere, some other place high above nothing. So I just sit and wonder why I still think of you all the time, Our bodies were joined before, but they’re not anymore, there’s no longer that internal rhyme. But that’s right, I’m probably just trying to write you to be Jeanie, And if you are then I’ll make you sing that same refrain: Christopher, you’re somewhere, some other place high above nothing.

about

Snake River's sixth album, LOST ALBUM was partially recorded in a former Church in rural Saskatchewan. The album doesn't necessarily reflect this, other than the fact that the sonics of this record are much different - all previous albums have been recorded in basements and rehearsal spaces. The cover of this album reflects the spirit of the recordings themselves - the songs are janglier and poppier and a little more surreal than some of their previous work. All of these elements were a part of their 2018 record, TREAD ON TO THE UNKNOWN YOU, but have now been expanded upon. One of the key new ingredients for this record was the viola of Amber Pb, something that was only hinted at on the last record.

The lyrics continue the story of Snake River Mountain, and some of its residents. Reginald McKruski of course is here, so is his wife Jeanie, as is their cat, Gerard, the cat. The characters however, have taken more control of their own fates, and the narrator of this story has lost control of his creations. He worries about what havoc they may create.
